Big Stitch Hand-Quilting Weekend Scarborough 2025

9th – 11th May 2025

During this wonderful weekend, we’ll look at the art of hand quilting in different cultures, focusing on learning Big Stitch by making Japanese Zokin (cleaning cloths) before making a Japanese wrapping cloth quilted in a simple design.

Accommodation

You will stay for two nights at the 4-star Crown Spa Hotel. Exuding luxury and style, the 4-star Crown Spa Hotel is the oldest hotel in Scarborough. Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival
Check in to your room from 3pm. Join your expert, retreat manager and fellow guests for dinner this evening.
Included Meals – Dinner.

Day 2 Workshops
Today Carolyn will teach you the basics of the stitches and how to transfer your design to fabric. We’ll start our Zokin.
Included Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3 Workshop and Departure
Today we’ll continue to stitch on the wrapping cloth, discussing different designs and how the cloth is used
Included Meals – Breakfast, Lunch.

Tour Notes

Although there are no mobility requirements for this tour, please note that you will need to be able to make your own way between our workshop room, your bedroom and the restaurant, which could involve walks of up to 5 minutes. If you require full disabled access, please check with us before booking.

Skill level: Beginners upwards
Techniques covered: Hand quilting, use and choice of different threads and appropriate needles, making a folded Zokin, transferring designs to cloth for quilting, choosing designs for a wrapping cloth, simple ways to use the cloth in gift giving.
